Today, Duke Energy announced the proposed Cherokee County nuclear project will be named the William States Lee III Nuclear Station (Lee Nuclear Station).For more on the life of Bill Lee, click here.
William States Lee III, known as Bill Lee, started his career with Duke Power as a civil engineer. In almost 40 years with the company, he became president, chief executive officer and chairman. Lee was a utility industry leader, a nuclear energy expert and worked tirelessly to serve the best interests of customers, employees and the community.
He led both national and international efforts to establish worldwide standards of nuclear safety and operating excellence.
Lee also championed multiple community causes including scouting and performing arts, with perhaps his greatest commitment to education. Lee provided support for preschool programs, as well as assisted with building top engineering programs.
Bill Lee made a difference in many ways for both his industry and community, and Duke Energy is pleased to name this project in his honor.
Note: The proposed project is still in the planning stages, with a license application planned for submission by 2008.
